Vibrant planting at a farmhouse in Lincolnshire

David Austin Rosa 'Boscobel' with Salvias

This farmhouse had recently been completely renovated and extended and the garden largely levelled. Retaining walls and steps were constructed and there was an existing decked seating area. The client's brief was to have a design that would bring the whole garden together to create a balanced and cohesive place. Being a large area, the challenge was to get the correct balance between solid and void and also obtaining some height for proportion. This was achieved with extensive borders being created around a circular lawn and planting several beautiful trees that were carefully selected for their seasonal interest.

The clients requested lots of colour in the planting scheme to reflect their effervescent characters, which was a joy to create. Large, deep borders of rich oranges, purples and acid greens among grasses and a selective few shrubs created a vibrant and textural effect around the decking area. An expansive rose border set off with colourful herbaceous underplanting gives pleasure upon looking out from the kitchen window and at the far side of the lawn a low-maintenance shrub border, woodland planting and an orchard.
